DOST Trains Future Science Journalists in Davao

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office No. XI, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII), has successfully conducted a two-day workshop titled “Science Journo Ako,” a seminar-Workshop on Science Journalism designed to help senior high school students in Davao City recognize the tangible benefits of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in their lives and the importance of effective communication in these fields.

Over the course of the workshop, 50 students and teachers from across the Davao region engaged in sessions covering a range of topics including Science News and Feature Writing, Basic Photography, Photojournalism, and Social Media Content Creation.

“The DOST is deeply committed to fostering a culture of science and innovation nationwide. We believe that empowering the younger generation with the skills and knowledge to effectively communicate scientific concepts is crucial,” said Dr. Anthony Sales, DOST XI Regional Director.

The event featured renowned resource speakers such as Henrylito Tacio, a multi-awarded journalist from Davao known for his expertise in science, technology, medicine, environment, agriculture, travel, and lifestyle reporting. Henry De Leon, a seasoned photojournalist at DOST-STII, shared his experiences capturing compelling images of DOST’s historic and memorable events over the past 30 years. Allan Mauro V. Marfal, an Information Officer and social media manager at DOST-STII, provided insights into managing social media content for platforms like DOST Philippines and the Philippine Journal of Science.

The workshop concluded with participants expressing their enthusiasm and newfound appreciation for science journalism. They left with enhanced skills and a deeper understanding of how science and technology impact their communities and the world at large. (PR)
