Five innovative projects addressing the impact of climate change on local communities took center stage during the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Science and Technology Expert’s Pool (NSTEP) Policy Dialogue held recently at the Crimson Hotel in Alabang.
Three standout projects from NSTEP Mindanao 1 were featured during the event highlighting the critical role of research in crafting responsive policies amid climate challenges.
Dr. Antonio Abdu-Sami M. Magomnang from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines Cagayan de Oro advocated for sustainable practices through renewable energy from waste, emphasizing training on biogas integration, waste management, and safety protocols.
Similarly, Dr. Elsa May Delima Baron of San Pedro College highlighted the need for watershed protection policies, specifically advocating for the designation of Baguan watershed in Tarragona, Davao Oriental, as a “Community Watershed” to expand protected areas.
Prof. Edison Roi D. Macusi of Davao Oriental State University presented insights on addressing climate change impacts, with a focus on small-scale fisheries and disaster response strategies, including training assistance and consistent implementation of regulations by local governments. Additionally, recommendations were made for building adaptation measures and enhancing community resilience in Banganga, emphasizing alternative livelihoods for coastal areas.
Policy Research Director Gilbert E. Lumantao of the Development Academy of the Philippines stressed the pivotal role of research in developing responsive policies, particularly in climate change contexts.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony C. Sales, Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology XI and Chairperson of NSTEP Mindanao I emphasized support for evidence-based policy-making, with NSTEP Mindanao I securing seven endorsements from the Regional Development Councils of Davao and Northern Mindanao, highlighting the tangible impact of NSTEP initiatives on policy recommendations and development.
Launched in 2020 by the NRCP, NSTEP serves as a platform empowering researchers, scientists, engineers, and artists to actively engage in shaping policies and designing programs. (PR)
