Sebastian Duterte oath-taking formally marked his assumption as Davao City’s acting mayor alongside Rodrigo Duterte II as acting vice mayor.
Acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte and Acting Vice Mayor Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II officially assumed their posts in Davao City on Friday, January 23, 2026, after taking their oaths of office at Davao City Hall, marking a significant leadership transition under the law of succession.
The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch XI Deputy Executive Judge Marie Estrellita S. Tolentino-Rojas. The event formalized the assumption of duties by the two officials following recent developments that triggered the automatic succession process as provided under existing laws.
Sebastian Duterte, previously serving as vice mayor, assumed the role of acting mayor, while Rodrigo Duterte II stepped in as acting vice mayor. Their appointments ensure continuity in the city’s governance as mandated by law, allowing local government operations and public services to proceed without disruption.
Several officials and guests witnessed the ceremony, including Congressman Isidro Ungab, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Davao City Director Mika-Chan Magtulis, and lawyer Martin Delgra. Family members of the Duterte brothers were also present during the oath-taking, underscoring the occasion’s personal and public significance.
In his brief remarks, Acting Mayor Duterte emphasized his commitment to maintaining stability in city governance and continuing programs aimed at public safety, social services, and economic development. He noted that his administration would focus on ensuring that essential city services remain uninterrupted while adhering to existing policies and development plans.
Acting Vice Mayor Duterte II likewise expressed readiness to fulfill his new role, particularly in supporting legislative functions at the city council and working closely with fellow officials to address local concerns. He said cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of the city government would remain a priority.
City officials said the smooth transition reflects the effectiveness of institutional mechanisms designed to uphold governance continuity, especially during periods of political change. Observers noted that succession-based leadership changes are not uncommon in local governments and are intended to prevent administrative gaps that could affect public service delivery.
The City Government of Davao reiterated that the oath-taking was conducted in accordance with legal procedures and existing regulations. Officials assured residents that city operations, including peace and order initiatives, disaster preparedness, and social welfare programs, would continue as planned.
Political analysts pointed out that the development has drawn public attention due to the Duterte family’s longstanding influence in Davao City politics. However, they stressed that the current appointments are procedural in nature and governed by the Local Government Code rather than electoral processes.
As acting officials, both Sebastian Duterte and Rodrigo Duterte II are expected to carry out their duties until circumstances call for further changes as provided by law. For now, city leaders emphasized that the focus remains on governance, public accountability, and service to Davao City residents.
The oath-taking marks a new chapter in the city’s leadership, with officials assuring the public that stability and continuity remain at the forefront of local governance priorities.
