Palawan town officials seek public apology after a content creator’s complaint about alleged poor treatment during a local event triggered controversy online and drew strong reactions from local leaders.

Ferdinand dela Merced, popularly known as “Philippine Looper,” drew criticism after claiming that he was not served breakfast during an event he attended in Bavaria, Palawan, an experience he said left him disappointed and offended. His remarks quickly circulated on social media, prompting a response from local tourism officials and members of the provincial board.

Dela Merced alleged that she was overlooked during the gathering and was not provided food, despite being present at the venue early in the day. The claim fueled online debate, with supporters sympathizing with his experience, while others questioned the accuracy of his account.

The Bataraza Municipal Tourism Office strongly disputed the accusation, clarifying that food was in fact offered to the content creator during the event. According to tourism officer Junaile Dawili, Dela Merced was encouraged to eat while waiting for the program to proceed.

“I told him that while we were waiting for the guests to finish their speeches, he could already eat a sandwich that was available,” Daily said. “I was not aware that he did not eat it. I also did not know whether he eats sandwiches or not.”

Dawili added that the event followed a set program and that food distribution was managed according to schedule, denying any intention to exclude or disrespect anyone present.

Palawan Board Member Al Nashier Ibba expressed disappointment over what he described as the content creator’s behavior toward the people of Bavaria. Ibba said the situation could have been handled privately instead of being aired publicly in a manner that painted the town in a negative light.

Ibba further clarified that Dela Merced was not an guest at the event and had allegedly insisted on attending despite not being part of the official program.

“There were bands scheduled to arrive, including Elias, so naturally the attention of the crowd was focused there,” Ibba explained. “If he had been officially invited as a celebrity guest, then it would have been understandable for him to raise concerns. But that was not the case.”

Local leaders emphasized that while criticism is valid, they expect fairness and responsibility from individuals with large online followings. Officials said the remarks had unintended consequences, affecting the morale of local organizers and potentially harming the town’s reputation as a welcoming destination.

The officials stressed that Bataraza has consistently supported tourism initiatives and content creators, provided proper coordination is observed.

“We welcome visitors and influencers,” one official said, “but mutual respect is essential.”

The incident has reignited discussions about the role of influencers and vloggers in shaping public perception, particularly when visiting communities outside major urban centers. Media analysts note that with growing influence comes greater responsibility to present accurate and balanced narratives.

Yet writing, Dela Merced has yet to issue a public apology or clarification in response to the statements made by local officials.

Malayan officials said they hope the issue will serve as a learning experience for both local organizers and content creators, underscoring the importance of communication, coordination, and cultural sensitivity.

They reiterated that Bataraza remains open to collaborations that promote tourism responsibly and respectfully, emphasizing that isolated misunderstandings should not overshadow the town’s hospitality and efforts to support local events.
