World War II bombs recovered in Davao City prompted heightened security measures after authorities discovered 23 unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) in Barangay Buhangin Proper, raising public safety concerns before officials confirmed that the area is now safe, the Philippine Army said Saturday, January 24.

The discovery was made during a coordinated operation led by the Philippine Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Battalion Support Command, following reports from residents about suspicious metallic objects found in the area. Upon technical inspection, military experts confirmed that the explosives had a combined weight of nearly 32 kilograms.

According to authorities, the recovered bombs were used by the Japanese military during World War II, a period when Davao City was a strategic location due to its ports, airfields, and agricultural value. While the ordnance showed visible signs of corrosion due to decades of exposure to the elements, EOD specialists emphasized that age does not eliminate explosive capability.

“although these explosives are already corroded, they can still detonate under the right conditions,” an Army official said. “That is why immediate recovery and disposal were necessary.”

Officials said the presence of the unexploded bombs posed a serious threat to nearby residents, especially considering that Barangay Buhangin Proper is a densely populated area with homes, small businesses, and pedestrian traffic.

Authorities immediately secured the site and temporarily restricted access while the EOD team conducted a systematic recovery. The operation followed strict safety protocols to prevent accidental detonation, including controlled handling and transport of the ammunition to a secure disposal facility.

Local officials worked closely with the military to ensure residents were informed and calm throughout the operation. No injuries were reported, and no evacuation was required beyond the immediate recovery zone.

After completing the recovery, authorities confirmed that the area is now safe. Barangay officials were advised to remain vigilant and to report any similar discoveries in the future.

“We assure the public that the explosives were safely removed and that there is no remaining danger in the area,” authorities said in a statement.

Residents expressed relief following the operation, with many noting that the discovery highlighted the lingering impact of World War II on parts of Mindanao, even decades later.

Historical Remnants Still Surface

Military historians note that unexploded ordnance continues to surface in various parts of the Philippines, particularly in areas that were heavily bombed or occupied during World War II. Davao City, which served as a significant Japanese stronghold, remains one of the locations where such discoveries occasionally occur.

Authorities reminded the public not to touch or attempt to move suspicious objects, especially those resembling old bombs, shells, or metal casings.

“If you see something unusual, report it immediately to your barangay officials or the police,” the Army said.

The Philippine Army reiterated its commitment to responding swiftly to UXO discoveries and emphasized the importance of community cooperation. Officials also encouraged local governments to conduct awareness campaigns, particularly in areas undergoing construction or land development where buried explosives may still be present.

As of Saturday evening, operations in Barangay Changing Proper were officially concluded, and normal activities have resumed.
