Balik Scientist Elevates Agricultural Research at UM Davao

To enrich scientific discourse and bolster research capabilities in the agricultural and natural resources sector, the University of Mindanao (UM) hosted Dr. Terence Al Abaquita, as a recipient of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist Program (BSP).

Having completed his undergraduate studies at Central Mindanao University and pursued advanced degrees in esteemed institutions across Germany, Spain, and Poland, Dr. Abaquita brought a wealth of expertise to the University. 

During his tenure, he conducted a series of activities benefiting researchers, faculty members, and students within the University’s Biology and Agroforestry Programs. These activities included lecture series, workshops, fieldwork, and establishing local and international linkages. 

Through these initiatives, Dr. Abaquita significantly enhanced the academic discourse within the university, particularly in the Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources sectors.

Dr. Aabquita also strengthened UM’s research capabilities by providing valuable insights into sustainable cropping systems, accelerated the adoption of modern agricultural practices, and promoted knowledge sharing among faculty and students. Additionally, his expertise facilitated advancements in pest management strategies and encouraged the exploration of novel agricultural technologies.

In his exit presentation, Dr. Abaquita expressed enthusiasm for potential future collaborations with UM after his tenure and emphasized the importance of sustained partnerships in advancing scientific research and development. 

The BSP is designed to harness the expertise of Filipino professionals abroad to enrich the local scientific landscape. It aims to provide access to specialized expertise and facilitate the transfer of strategic technologies crucial for national development. (PR)
