President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. departed the Philippines on Sunday morning for New York City to participate in engagements at the United Nations, where he is expected to highlight the Philippines’ position on key global issues, including peace initiatives, international cooperation, and the promotion of women’s rights. The visit forms part of the administration’s broader effort to strengthen the country’s diplomatic presence in international forums.
Marcos’ visit to the UN from March 9 to 10, 2026, will be his 41st overseas trip since assuming office in 2022. Unlike in other overseas trips, Marcos did not issue a departure statement before the plane carrying him took off at 10:22 a.m.
During his trip, the president is expected to participate in discussions and meetings with international leaders and representatives from different countries. Officials said the visit will allow the Philippines to present its priorities on peace, humanitarian issues, and global cooperation.
One of the key events Marcos is scheduled to attend is the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, a global gathering that focuses on promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls worldwide. The Philippine delegation is expected to highlight initiatives aimed at protecting women’s rights and strengthening programs that promote gender equality in economic and social development.
Government officials said the Philippines will present its efforts to improve opportunities for women through policies that support leadership participation, economic inclusion, and social protection programs. The administration continues to promote initiatives designed to strengthen gender equality and expand opportunities for women across various sectors.
Aside from discussions on women’s rights, the president is also expected to raise issues related to international peace and security. The Department of Foreign Affairs earlier said the Philippines plans to emphasize the importance of diplomacy, adherence to international law, and peaceful dialogue in addressing ongoing global conflicts.
During his stay in New York, Marcos is also expected to deliver remarks during events linked to the United Nations General Assembly, where he will outline the Philippines’ views on global cooperation, sustainable development, and regional stability.
Another objective of the visit is to promote the Philippines’ candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. Philippine officials believe the country’s long-standing support for peacekeeping missions, international law, and multilateral diplomacy strengthens its position in seeking the seat.
The president is also expected to meet with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss international developments and areas where the Philippines can contribute to global cooperation efforts.
Meanwhile, Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, Education Secretary Sonny Angara, and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III will serve as caretakers of government while Marcos is in New York.
Officials said the president’s participation in United Nations engagements reflects the Philippines’ commitment to multilateral cooperation and its role in addressing international concerns such as peace, development, and human rights. The visit is also expected to strengthen diplomatic ties with other countries while highlighting the Philippines’ priorities in global policymaking and international partnerships.
