Jonvic Remulla Portugal Zaldy Co developments are drawing attention as the Interior Secretary prepares to travel abroad to locate the businessman linked to the controversial flood control investigation in the Philippines.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla is set to travel to Portugal as part of the Philippine government’s efforts to locate and bring back businessman Zaldy Co, who has been linked to the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in flood control projects.

Remulla confirmed in a recent interview that he is preparing for the trip, emphasizing the government’s intent to ensure accountability in connection with the multi-billion peso flood control program controversy. The issue has drawn widespread public attention following reports that several infrastructure projects may have been overpriced or poorly implemented.

Kung kinakailangan, pupunta tayo doon. Kailangan nating kausapin at alamin ang buong katotohanan,” Remulla said during an interview, indicating his willingness to personally oversee efforts related to the case. He added that coordination with international authorities is being arranged to facilitate the process.

The investigation centers on flood mitigation projects under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), which has come under scrutiny after allegations surfaced regarding questionable allocations and project execution. Lawmakers and oversight bodies have begun examining the flow of funds and identifying individuals who may be held liable.

Authorities believe that Co may possess key information that could shed light on how certain contracts were awarded and implemented. His reported presence in Portugal has prompted officials to explore diplomatic and legal channels to secure his cooperation.

Remulla clarified that the trip is not solely about enforcement but also about ensuring due process. “Hindi lang ito tungkol sa pagkuha ng isang tao. Importante rin na malinaw ang proseso at may respeto sa batas ng ibang bansa,” he explained. He stressed that any action taken would comply with international legal standards and bilateral agreements.

The DILG chief also underscored the importance of transparency, noting that the administration is committed to restoring public trust. “Ang gusto natin ay malinaw sa taumbayan kung saan napunta ang pera at kung paano ito ginamit,” he said.

Meanwhile, the DPWH has maintained that it is cooperating with ongoing investigations and is open to audits and reviews. Officials from the agency have previously stated that safeguards are in place to ensure project integrity, although they acknowledged the need to address public concerns.

Analysts say the move to send a high-ranking official abroad signals the seriousness of the government’s campaign against corruption. It also highlights the complexity of cases involving individuals who may be outside Philippine jurisdiction.

As the investigation progresses, more names may emerge, and additional actions could be taken depending on the findings. For now, the planned trip to Portugal marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to pursue accountability and transparency in public infrastructure spending.
