LRT-1 free rides will be available to commuters on November 9, 11 and 13, 2026, during designated morning and afternoon hours as the Philippines prepares to host the 49th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit. The initiative gives passengers an opportunity to save on selected trips while the country prepares for the regional gathering.
Commuters using the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) can ride for free during selected hours on November 9, 11 and 13 as the Philippines prepares to host the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
The free-ride promotion will run from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on each date, according to reports citing an announcement by LRT-1 operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC).
The schedule covers two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon. It does not mean train rides will be free throughout the operating day. Passengers travelling outside those periods should expect regular fares to apply.
Free rides on three selected dates
The promotion is scheduled for Monday, November 9; Wednesday, November 11; and Friday, November 13. It applies to LRT-1 services, which connect stations in Metro Manila from the northern part of the route to its southern end.
Commuters should check LRMC’s official channels before travelling for instructions, service advisories or changes. Reports reviewed do not provide a station-by-station list or clearly explain whether passengers must follow a special ticketing or entry procedure.
Passengers should also avoid assuming that other rail lines are included. The announcement concerns LRT-1; the reports reviewed do not establish a similar free-ride schedule for LRT-2 or MRT-3.
Separate free jeepney service
The LRT-1 promotion is separate from a government-backed free modern jeepney program reported to run from November 5 to 14, between 4 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The jeepney initiative covers two routes: SM Fairview to Buendia and vice versa, and Sucat to Baclaran and vice versa. The program involves the Department of Tourism, Department of Transportation and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
The initiatives have different dates, hours and routes. Commuters should check the specific service they plan to use instead of treating the announcements as one system-wide free transportation offer.
Part of preparations for the 2026 ASEAN Summit
The promotions come ahead of the Philippines’ hosting of the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, scheduled for November 16 to 18, 2026. The country is chairing ASEAN this year under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”
The summit brings regional leaders together to discuss political and security cooperation, economic integration and social development. Transportation initiatives form part of the public-facing preparations for the country’s chairship.
What commuters should remember
Those planning to use LRT-1 on the promotional dates should note the two free-ride windows: 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Allow time for queues, follow station personnel’s instructions and monitor official advisories for updates.
LRMC’s confirmation of ticketing procedures, passenger eligibility and station-specific conditions would help prevent confusion. Until those details are clearly announced, passengers should rely on official LRT-1 updates for the latest guidance.
The promotion offers commuters a chance to save on selected trips while the Philippines prepares to welcome delegates for the ASEAN meetings.
